Examination

oil on canvas, 35×50 cm – 2026

Don’t let appearances fool you – this is a routine psychological and physical examination at a prestigious mages’ school, and it is set up on purpose as a multi-layered stress test. Among other things, the aspiring mage is required to bring a mundane weapon of their choice and has their instinctual reactions and body language carefully observed and recorded. People who can’t handle psychological discomfort aren’t considered fit to learn advanced magic and harness the power it confers. Contrary to what a human observer may think though it’s not being nude through the hours long examination that causes discomfort, since most people in this context don’t wear clothes anyway – it’s the scent. If you have never been around the vulture people, you cannot fully understand how nerve-wracking it is for a mammal to be surrounded by many of them in a cramped space. Yet they are among the most powerful natural magic users, so aspiring mages better learn to be at ease among them.

By the way, two of the vultures are female, but there is no obvious sexual dimorphism in their species, so it’s almost impossible to tell from this picture.
