Child of the aviary

oil on canvas, 30×40 cm – 2023

When she hatched from her egg, her nature caused quite a commotion in the aviary. Since her mother was a blue and yellow macaw and her father a red macaw, it was expected that she would have a hybrid plumage of the type humans had dubbed “Catalina”. Nobody expected her to be a bird-fox hybrid though. All parrots knew her parent had been a little too welcoming to the fox that occasionally snuck into the aviary through a narrow underground tunnel. Life in the aviary was complicated and terribly boring, and every bird understood that what little fun could be had had to be treasured, and every bird mostly minded their own business. But how was such a three-way hybridisation even possible?

The commotion died out quickly though. Again, life in an aviary is complicated, and there are much bigger things to worry about. The winged fox was a cute little chick and grew slowly compared to most birds, so when she was in her teenage years her parents were already elderly. But they always loved her and comforted her when she felt out of place, reassuring her that she would one day find somebody just like her to share her life with.
